Rosebud Mission

Social/Community

The Rosebud Reservation is home to the Sicangu Lakota Tetunwan Oyate band of Sioux, located in south central South Dakota. While rich in culture and heritage of this tribe, residents face tough circumstances due to unemployment, poverty, and homelessness.

Holy Cross has established a relationship with the people of the Two Strike Community on the Rosebud Indian Reservation. Every year a group organized by Holy Cross travel to Rosebud for a mission trip experience.

The Rosebud Sioux Reservation in South Dakota borders the Pine Ridge Reservation on its northwest corner and the State of Nebraska borders to the south. An act of congress established the reservation in 1889. The reservation has a total area of 1,442 square miles and is home to twenty communities with a total of 21,245 members living on the reservation.

The major economic occupations include cattle ranching and farming. Many members also work for tribal services including administration and schools. However, economic hardships abound. High unemployment (85%), poverty, and understaffed health care facilities all have contributed to the problem of rising suicide. Working individuals on the reservation have a median household income of only $19,046. These low wages, coupled with high unemployment, mean many families cannot afford much needed home repairs. An estimated one out of three residents on the reservation is homeless, and six out of ten live in substandard housing. These challenges present an obvious invitation to reach out and support this community with ministry.

WHAT WE DO AT ROSEBUD:
-Work project: As the time approaches and we know who is going and what skill set we have, we determine the work projects. Some of the past work projects have included painting the community building, both inside and out; restoring trails and paths; repairing bicycles; making benches for inside and outside of the community center.
-Providing meals: We provide community meals for the residents.
-Lead a childrens program for 20-30 school age children. The childrens program includes a Vacation Bible School as well as physical games and activities.

THE BENEFITS of a ROSEBUD MISSION TRIP:
-Serving others
-Experiencing Christ and growing in our faith
-Being the hands and feet of Christ (being servant leaders)
-Developing relationships both within our youth group and with the residents of the community at Rosebud.

The pastoral staff and members of the congregation work to organize the yearly mission trip to Rosebud. In the month(s) before the trip, requests for funds and item donations are posted.
